Local Fishing Conservationists, Custodians of Chao Phraya River Fish Species

Mr. Phaitoon Paveennamkul, the overseer of the project for reviving aquatic animals and conserving Chao Phraya River fish species, is another source of pride for the residents of Sapphaya and those living near the Chao Phraya River. In early January, the Samphaya Old Market Restoration Association collaborated with local fishermen led by Mr. Phaitoon to host international students from Mahidol University to learn about local fishing practices and fish species conservation. Over 20 fish species are nurtured and grouped together for breeding purposes to generate income for local fishermen. These fish include ornamental species and those for consumption. During the morning fishing routine, fish cages are inspected, fish are fed, and branches are placed to provide habitat for the fish. Losing a fish species that once thrived in the Chao Phraya River would be a regrettable scenario, akin to preserving its memory solely in the past or in museums. Consuming a variety of fish not only diversifies the food chain but also stimulates demand in the market. Without fish conservationists like Mr. Phaitoon, who are dedicated to breeding and preserving various fish species, the heritage of the Chao Phraya River's diverse fish species would gradually fade away.

For those interested in joining the project or visiting Sapphaya, please contact the Sapphaya Tourism Community Enterprise to inquire about learning programs on traditional fishing methods. Let's show our support and encouragement to the local fishermen of the Chao Phraya River.
